SWALA CAMP

Swala is situated in a copse of majestic acacia trees at the edge of the Gurusi wetlands and the unfurling savannah beyond; nestled in a remote pocket of Tarangire National Park. The stands of ancient baobab trees, large family herds of elephants, prolific bird life and dry season concentrations of wildlife make Tarangire the classic Africa of lore feted by explorers, immortalized in documentaries and sought after by the discerning traveller.

The Facts
·  Located in the far South West of Tarangire
·  9 large and luxurious en-suite tents, each with their own personal butler
The Detail

This picturesque safari hideaway is exclusive in the southwestern corner of Tarangire National Park, affording guests private game viewing, wilderness luxury, and a privileged glimpse of an Africa, untrammelled by tourism.

Swala's nine private, permanent tents feature en-suite bathrooms with showers, complemented by fittings and fixtures crafted from local materials to mirror the understated elegance of the time-honored safari style. The elevated terraces on the tents are appointed towards the waterhole that attracts wildlife year-round to ensure that your African wildlife experiences do not finish when you leave your vehicle. Throughout your stay, you will be serenaded by the resident wildlife, including impala (after which the camp is named), waterbuck, lion and various elephant groups. There is even a resident leopard that puts in the occasional guest appearance at the waterhole during dinner.
Meals are taken in the comfortable dining tent, with full silver service, Pan-African cuisine and fine wines adding to the "country house under canvas" ambience. Swala's accomplished hosts, personal tent attendants, safari guides and Masai askaris that accompany you to your tent at night enhance your stay with their own personalized African affability, professionalism and knowledge.

As part of their commitment to this forgotten corner of Tanzania, the staff and management team at Swala have initiated a pioneering community conservation project that has recently led to the building of a school for the children of a village that borders Tarangire. Guests at Swala are offered the privileged opportunity to learn more about these projects and become involved as part of their stay.

KIKOTI TENTED CAMP

This luxury, tented camp recaptures the time-honoured splendour of the traditional safari camp of yesteryear, when comfort was defined by superior service and campfire hospitality rather than modern conveniences and anonymous welcome. Each of the ten large tents has sewn-in floors and plumbed en-suite facilities and have been laid out in the traditional safari manner with wooden beds, fresh linen and a veranda from which to admire the views of the Silale wetlands in the valley below. The tents have been raised on platforms of natural timber and appointed for views of the plum-purple sunsets smeared across the unfurling savannah and to allow freedom of movement for the wildlife that pass through the area.

Kikoti's proximity to Tarangire National Park allows the camp to offer a wide choice of exploratory game-drives through the classic African savannah and acacia parkland of this un-proclaimed wilderness. Moreover, the position in the migratory corridor just outside the Park provides a range of activities that are forbidden elsewhere in the game lands of Northern Tanzania. Nature walks with rangers are an exhilarating way to get back to the primeval state of nature, uncovering the dens, feeding habits and waterholes of the African wildlife and learning more about the symbiotic intricacies of the eco-system that surrounds you.

The nearby Maasai village also invites clients into their homesteads for an insight into the customs and lifestyle of this fascinating ethnic group or to join in the traditional dancing around the campfire lit in the kraal area. Perhaps the highlight of many people's stay is the night drive, a safari by the light of the moon (and a spotlight, just in case) in search of the prowling wildlife that only emerges in the dark and which adds a very privileged dimension to a safari in Tanzania.

The Facts
10 large tents
Set up as part of a community project
Walking/night safaris

Our view
This simple, but beautiful camp harks back to the days when Ralph Lauren was not seen on the bed linen!! The balance of the camp is just right with relatively simple but tidy rooms and a stunning communal area with thatched dining area and camp fire. On the whole, this camp, while suffering slightly from being outside the park, is a very good choice for those looking to save a bit of money but still have a really authentic experience.

OLIVER'S  CAMP

Originally established by John Oliver, a guide who has lived in Tarangire for around 20 years, this intimate, luxury camp provides the best walking and location of any of the Tarangire camps.

The Facts

  •   8 luxury, ensuite tents
  •   Remote location
  •   Walking safaris
  •   Great guiding

The Details
Oliver’s Camp has one of the most wonderful settings one could imagine and offers an unparalleled bush experience. Situated in the middle of Tarangire National Park’s unspoiled wilderness zone, the camp overlooks the Minyonyo pools flood plain where you can experience a walking safari getting close to some of the many herds of elephants found in the area.

Oliver’s Camp has just eight luxury tents with en suite bathroom, open air shower and solid classic wooden furniture that simply enhance the African bush experience. The exclusive feel is added on by an intimate library, seamless service and high standard of food. The staff have years of experience, and a stay in this camp is like joining a warm family, who will share with you a deeper knowledge of this stunning national park and its inhabitants.
Walking safaris are the speciality here, and the guides make the experience one of lifetime with their knowledge and experience you will experience nature at is very best. Return from a productive gamedrive or a walk having marvelled at the famous baobab trees and the amazing wildlife in the area. You will be met by smiling staff and a relaxed atmosphere. Your hosts will make you feel that you have stepped back in time to a camp where Hemingway could be sitting next to you at the camp fire, sipping on a good whisky.

Our view
The camp has had to move location a few times in the last 20 or so years, but has now settled in what must, undoubtedly, be one of the best spots in the park. The guiding with Paul has always been up among the best in East Africa and, drawing on his vast knowledge of the park, they have located in s beautiful site down in the south, away from the much busier central areas. One of only two camps able to walk from camp and in the park, a stay in Oliver’s is amongst one of the best experiences in the north.

MAWE NINGA TENTED LODGE

 Lodge Overview
Mawe Ninga Camp, opened February 2004, is a charming tented lodge at the heart of Tarangire National Park. Mawe Ninga is a small and natural style tented camp that is locally owned and Tanzanian managed. The real highlight of Mawe Ninga is its authenticity, closeness with nature, friendly staff and serene atmosphere. Don’t expect lavish over the top luxury but rather rustic accommodations, a great ‘bush’ feel, sweeping views of the surrounding woodlands and an all around relaxing and memorable experience.

Mawe Ninga Camp, owned by the same company that runs the well-regarded Olduvai Camp, is an option for those people seeking natural style or rustic accommodations in a small and personalized setting far from the larger tourist lodges including Tarangire Sopa Lodge and Tarangire Safari Lodge. However, the camp may be a little too rustic for some individuals. If you’re keen on spending some time at a small bush camp in Tarangire but require a higher degree of comfort, then a better choice may be Swala Camp, Tarangire Treetops or Kikoti Camp.

Mawe Ninga (Swahili for Dove Rock) is perched high on a hilltop and consists of 12 tents with wooden floors, thatched roofs, ensuite bathrooms consisting of a thunder box (long drop toilet) and bladder shower and private decks with sweeping views of the beautiful Tarangire woodlands. Maasai from surrounding villages are employed at Mawe Ninga providing for a unique atmosphere and interesting conversations around the fire pit each evening. The views are truly spectacular from the fire pit and the sunsets from Mawe Ninga have to rank as one of the best in Tanzania. Click here for a full size picture of the view from the Mawe Ninga fire pit.

At sunset we walked over to have a drink. Chairs were set up on one of the huge boulders with a fire pit in the middle smoking away, clearing the air of mosquitoes and other bugs. While we were sipping our drinks, enjoying a lovely sunset, the Maasai started singing with the most glorious voices that it raised the hair on our arms. When we asked what they were singing about they said....they missed their cows and were singing to them. An extraordinary last night, we dined under the stars, never wanting to leave.
Edie & Richard R. - November 2004 - Palm Beach, FL

Location
Mawe Ninga Camp (altitude of 3,712 feet) is located in the mid to northwest section of Tarangire with grand views out over the woodlands. The distant shores of Lake Burungi can be seen way out to the west and even a glimpse of Lake Manyara is possible to the northwest on a clear day.

Access
Mawe Ninga Camp and Tarangire are usually incorporated into our signature fly in and drive back safaris at the conclusion of your itinerary. It’s certainly a great spot to unwind, relax and enjoy your last couple nights with the elephants of Tarangire. Typically you will be arriving at Mawe Ninga Camp after either a game drive in Ngorongoro Crater or Lake Manyara. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to drive from the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater to the Lake Manyara park gate. The Tarangire park gate is another 1.5 hours past Lake Manyara. From the Tarangire park gate to your accommodations at Mawe Ninga will take approximately 1 hour at a leisurely game drive speed as you head south through Tarangire. Mawe Ninga Camp is approximately 9 miles south of the main Tarangire gate, which is at the northern tip of the park.

Accommodation
Mawe Ninga Camp consists of 12 individual tents built along the ridge of a prominent hill at the heart of Tarangire. Two are honeymoon suites and are slightly more secluded and perched higher for a wider view. There is a mix of double tents (1 queen size bed) and twin tents twins (2 twin beds). The doubles can be converted to triples to accommodate two adults and one child upon request.
The completely sealable tents rest on wooden floors and under thatched roofs. They are built on and between large granite rock formations for extra privacy and a more secure feeling. The ensuite bathroom facilities consist of a thunder box (long drop toilet) and a bladder shower. Please note that there is no running water at Mawe Ninga. The bladder shower is gravity fed and a water filled pitcher with an accompanying bowl takes the place of a sink. In front of each tent is a private wooden veranda complete with two deck chairs and a small table. The views from each veranda are truly spectacular.
The main facilities consist of an open sided dinning deck and a circular fire pit built atop a massive granite kopje where you can meet the local Maasai and enjoy the best sunsets in Tanzania.

Food and Drink
The meals are very good at Mawe Ninga. The cooks as well as the staff rotate back and forth from Olduvai Camp and Mawe Ninga Camp. Breakfast consists of toast, fresh fruit and juices. Orders are separately taken for eggs prepared to your requirements and pancakes. There are two choices with lunch. You can either drive back to the lodge for a hot lunch or have a private picnic lunch while out in the bush. Dinner is very good and consists of three courses. The menu varies daily. Vegetarian and child friendly meals (i.e. pizza) can be prepared upon request. Beer, wine and cocktails are available and are reasonably priced. A drink tab will be run for the duration of your stay and you can simply settle upon departure.

MAROMBOI TENTED CAMP

An impressive landscape from the Rift Valley gives the visitor an amazing natural welcome to an area extraordinarily rich in wildlife. The camp offers stunning views of the Manyara National Park, Rift Valley, Ngorongoro highlands and on clear days even Oldonyo Lengai a sacred mountain to the Maasai. In the wet season, the Manyara and Tarangire Pans fill with water which attracts huge flocks of Flamingos and other wading birds. The area is also the only place in Easter Africa where one is often able to see the migration herds of tens of thousands of Wildebeest and Zebra, followed by predators. Although the migrations do occur in other areas of Tanzania, the tree cover prohibits a view of the magnitude that you are able to see at Maramboi Tented Camp because of the exposed nature of the surrounding grassland.

Maramboi Tented Camp Facilities
10 tents spacious tents on generous, ample wooden decks. They all have en suite facilities and private veranda with 24 hours electric lighting. Beautifully located on an elegant elevated wood platform with thatched roofing encircled by majestic Palms trees. Offers an uninterrupted view of the Manyara shore and the Bush beyond. Lake Burunge Tented Camp

Lake Burunge Tented Camp is only a 10 minutes drive away from Tarangire National Park. Lake Burunge Tented Camp consists of 20 Luxury Tents located in a shady bush land grove, with spectacular views onto Lake Burunge. Its main building offers a central lounge and bar/dining area built on a raised wooden deck. This elevated platform is the ideal venue for guests to relax and enjoy a sun downer whilst the sun disappears over the lake, or to simply sit and enjoy the warm fire place.

Area Information
Tarangire has regions of quite dense bush, but with high grasses and huge old baobab trees unlike the green forests of Manyara. The land is hilly and dominated by the impressive valley of the Tarangire River, which attracts large numbers of migrant animals during the dry months, especially between July and September.

Tarangire Wildlife and Migration Patterns
During these months the concentration of animals around the Tarangire river is almost as diverse and reliable as in the Ngorongoro Crater, but the ecosystem here is balanced by a localized migration pattern that is followed by most animals other than lions, who don't tend to abandon their territory.
During April and May most animals disperse to where there is widespread greenery, vegetation and water. In June, the eland and oryxes begin to return, followed by elephants which return towards the end of the month. Tarangire is a great spot for elephant gatherings at the end of the rainy season in June, zebra and wildebeest return together through July.

By mid-August all the animals are congregating around their last reliable water source, the Tarangire River. The calving season falls in the early months of the year, through January, February and March, and so makes the most of the fresh grass during the rainy season.

Throughout the year there are always a fantastic number of colorful birds swooping and strutting along the rough paths in front of your vehicle, with likely spotting of the Paradise Whyder and endearing Yellow-collared lovebirds. There are a few resident lion, which are easier to spot when the migration arrives to excite their taste buds. In other months they look quite mean and lean and slip easily between the lengthening grasses.
